I player hits 75 million downloads

Posted on Wednesday, May 21, 2008 in general, PC

ok going back to this post I player 6.3 peta?

I discussed that the Iplayer has transfered about 6.3 petabytes over the internet in just over 3 months now nearly 2 months (6 weeks) on they managed to transfer another 33 million which is 4,950,000,000 bytes so another 4.9 peta! which works out to be about 117 terabytes per week thats about a 60% increase! now this is getting stupid now.

well i suppose BT will have to upgrade soon to cope

one last purchase

Posted on Monday, May 19, 2008 in Hardware, Pain, PC, PSX

today I will be purchasing the over powered Crysis mainly because I want to see if the new rig can handle it well its better handle it. well it can’t be as bad as my last attempt

Crysis-ouch

its kind of funny i”m not really that interesting in the game but its kind of like the fry cry and doom 3 of yesteryear if your pc can run it then its top notch if not its still top notch just not amazing.

the mad thing is I can run every other game as top spec now it just seems more cost effective to buy a new rig rather than upgrading the ram in the old one.

I do hope its not to expensive

final spec

Posted on Monday, May 19, 2008 in general, Pain, PC

ok the case is here and I must say its a bit bigger than i expected but that real problem I’ve found a good home for it anyway.

now I’ve also glad its bigger than I thought because now I don’t need to buy a PSU I can use the my spare hiper 435watt PSU. my only concern is this might not be powerful enough under high load using a calculator its recommended to have a 375 Watt psu… it should be ok after all its not a cheap model.

ok next on the list is the CPU

Intel core2 Q9300 £169.00

ok about £50 more than what I wanted to spend but the benchmarks on it show a 50% improvement over the one I was going to buy now that might not sound like much but it really is. in comparison my old computer and my current computer had a 50% increase in CPU power and it made a major difference.

Motherboard

ok I’m never one to spend alot on a motherboard because after you hit the £50 mark you basically start adding a few new shiny things and stuff you will never use but I was a sap for this one.

ASUS P5K-VM

mainly because its ASUS and they are the only mobo company left I haven’t had a dud motherboard from or one that causing me to want to rip my hair out (ok Pc chips in the same boat but that are budget mobo’s)

RAM

now I’m stuck between a CL4 set and a CL5 set now a CL4 set allows more head room for overclocking but I’m not planning to push the cpu that much just to give it a bit of a boost.

but then again I’ve also got the 4GB memory address limit so 3gb is my real max.

emm I think CL5 probably the OCZ

OCZ 4GB Kit (2x2GB) 800MHz/PC2-6400

in matter a fact sod it its £6 more for the 4-4-4-12 set so campare that to the 5-4-4-18 set yea £6 is worth it (never noticed the price drop)

CPU fan

Zalman CNPS7500

now this is a strange thing to list but its costing me £25 dammit so i’m going to. its a shame I had to get the blue LED version seems a waste considering I haven’t got a windows in my case. well anyway the reason for choosing is to try and get rid of as much noise as possible while having an excellent cooling Solution. and have it fit in the tight case at the same time.

750Gb hdd
2 X 80mm fan (not planing to use then unless i need to)
1 X 120 mm fan (i might not need this the case came with a free one so i’m going to test it in a bit)

and lastly Graphics card

Inno3D 8800GT 512MB GDDR3 Wind Edition Cooler

now the reason for this is because it comes with a large fan and the reviews say its near silent (never know what that mean but its better than sounding like an aircraft carrier). if its not silent then I’ll be getting an after market cooler probably a passive heat sink considering the 120 mm fan going to be inches away from it.

optical drives

DVD-RW

now I’m holding off for the minute on getting a blu ray/HD-dvd drive mainly because I lack the media and a large monitor but when I get my new monitor I’ll be getting the drive.

floppy drive

ok i’m not putting on in. becasue the only time I ever need to use one of these is when the PC needs a bios update or I need to install raid but these can be done from USB pens now so who cares. I’m going to put in a cards reader because i’ll have more use for this mainly for my phone and psp but hey

Enlight Black 26-in-1

and thats that I would buy it now but ebuyers basket has gone kaput again yea…

Dawn of vista

Posted on Sunday, May 18, 2008 in general, PC

I honestly cannot believe I’m writing this.

ok I’ve been looking at some benchmarks and weighing up the advantages of a 64Bit OS over a 32 bit, this is mainly because a 32bit os cannot handle 4Gb of ram because XP’s memory limit is 4Gb and for reason of X and Y you lose 0.5-1Gb of ram to the OS, which I knew about before but hey.

but here’s the catch looking at some benchmarks Vista 64bit out performs XP 32bit with 4GB of ram yea… it might be worth looking into XP 64 bit but I will be installing vista onto this machine along with PClinux and XP and if these benchmarks are true then who knows I might be using vista (ok first thing to go will be the aero skin but hey)

ok now I really need to revise for the AI exam. no more distractions

CPU selected

I’m going for the Q9300

originally I was against getting a Quad core mainly because by the time Dual core starts really getting software and game support or even OS support then the chip will be outdated but then on the other hand for the price of this chip and the data I have found on it makes it a hard choice not to.

ok this chip can be over clocked to 3.7Ghz using water cooling and it will run at 30C

ok now with that power it can go super pie in 13 seconds, which is insane

now if I get this chip and overclock it to about 2.8 (that only a 300 Mhz over clock) it will out perform most of the Dual core extreme chips. now that I like. now as soon as my case gets here to tomorrow I will start ordering the rest of the system and by Wednesday I should have a new PC (would have been Tuesday if it wasn’t for the exam)

if anyone believes this to be a bad choice speak up now you have less than 24 hours

damn nightmare

Posted on Thursday, May 15, 2008 in PC, uni

wow that exam was evil… if I fail it i won’t be surprised I don’t think i’ve ever waffled on so much in an exam in my life.

I kind of wish I did the maths ones now they did seem easier after I started the 3rd part which was on C and game engines… the funny thing is I did question one of the maths bit then crossed it out to do the 3rd part! WTF!

so ok only 2 easy exams left so not too much worry now.

and on the brighter side of things I’ve just ordered my case

it should be here on monday lets see if tekhead can live up to its 2 shining reviews. as well as the cases shining reviews. also i’ve found out that this case can run fine with a geforce 8800GT and a E8400 without any heat issues, which is great news.

I’ve decided not to get the blu ray disc drive for the moment i’ll get my new monitor before i do that.

well i suppose I should get one with read the 500+ pages of crap ready for tomorrows exam… how fun…

and for a bit of fun

code monkey’s

oh and no pants wednesday :D

oh and an AMV of the opening song (anime legend of black heaven)

case transplant

Posted on Monday, May 12, 2008 in general, PC

ok now that i’m getting a new PC it time to shink my current one mainly because currently it a total beast. in fact the picture above make it look small but trust me I had to hack part of my desk away to make it fit. but the plan is to put it in a MATX case either a cube or a tower which ever cheapest really. but first i need a MATX motherboard for a 939 socket… emm this might be fun but hopefully £50 should do it then I can get rid of it, but then i’ll have another empty case doing nothing and an old 939 motherboard… yea

does anyone want a case and a 939 motherboard :D

I suppose I could always leave it in there…

dammit to hell

Posted on Monday, May 12, 2008 in general, PC

ok I was in the mood to start ordering my new PC, well just the case because when I get it I’ll know what kind of restrictions it’ll have. because the amount of time’s i’ve ordered a PC and found the case is a total bitch and something does fit right. now that i think about it 2 PC’s have gone well and the other 8 haven’t (in the last year) so this time the case is coming first.

BUT, yes there is a but.

MY wonderful Aerocool M40 is no where to be found on Ebuyer or any other of my trusted sites… damn i hate it when this happens. SO I have a choice between

www.eclipsecomputers.com (where the item is “normal in stock… £37.54) only found bad feedback for this one (always the same though people only mention sites when they go bad)

www.spotonuk.com (5 in stock £40.70) and the only 2 review i found on this site where good

www.thecoolingshop.com (4 in stock £51.70) ok mixed reviews here some good some bad.

www.tekheads.co.uk (4 in stock £42.00) once again 2 good reviews…

so has anyone used these sites before??? or does anyone have a better site i can use

my gut instinct say tekheads or spotonuk but i’m not sure.

I honestly hate ordering off a company online for the first time well unless they are a big one like ebuyer, overclockers or threadless

well whatever I suppose I should make my way to uni now ready for the first exam thank god there is only 2 weeks left

TF 2 update

Posted on Wednesday, May 7, 2008 in Game, PC

ouch

now is it just me or does that look painful.

ok this all comes in the new gold rush update along with the achievements and a new map hehe so there is going to be alot of medic running around for the next few weeks. I do hope they bring these to the 360 even if the achievements are only worth one point each that’ll leave them room for all the other classes to have another 36 achievements each. along with all the new weapons for each class :D

Mirror's Edge: just what I expected

Posted on Wednesday, May 7, 2008 in 360, Game, PC, PS3

I highly recommend watching it in HD

all I can say is wow the screenshots showed the game off nicely but this video shows you everything very nicely. I honestly can’t wait for this game and I think i’ll be getting it on the PS3 as well because I just have a hunch its going to look alot better and it might ever control better with the motion sensors in the control.

but this is all guess work we’ll just have to wait and see.
